FACES FROM THE CIVIL WAR

These photographs were taken around the time of the Civil War. Do you notice anything unusual about them? Why aren't they smiling? These are Daguerreotypes, the first popular photographic form. In order to make a picture, the subjects had to sit still for up to 15 minutes. Many soldiers had their Daguerreotypes made before they went off to war. In fact, the Civil War was the first photographed war.
